Painting the past into the present.

Through her business, Pilaru Art, Ree honors the cultural knowledge handed down by generations of Elders before her. She carries this ancestral wisdom forward, transforming it into a powerful expression of her identity.

From a young age, I was fortunate to learn how to paint directly from my Uncle, renowned artist, Dougie Ryder. His guidance wasn’t just about technique, it was about passing down the style, stories, and deep connection to country that have been shared through our family for generations. Our art is a reflection of our culture, our shared dreaming stories, and the land we belong to. It’s a legacy that I’m proud to carry on, because I wouldn’t be an artist without him. Learning from our elders is the right way - it’s how we keep our traditions strong and honor the knowledge they’ve entrusted to us.

My Nana Lucy Ryder played an essential role in preserving the Nhanda language, ensuring its continuity for future generations. Through her dedication and resilience, she kept our words, culture, and identity alive in a world that often tried to silence our people. I’ve been fortunate to learn our family’s rich history and dreaming stories not only through Nana Lucy herself but also through her daughter, my Aunty Gwen. I come from a matriarchal lineage and am proud to belong to a family of strong, wise women who have carried the responsibility of cultural preservation with unwavering strength. Their guidance and commitment have deeply shaped who I am today, grounding me in the traditions and stories that connect me to my heritage.

This image, located at the Kalbarri Skywalk honours Granny Jilba, a Nhanda apical ancestor and my direct foremother from four generations back. Another image shows her daughter, "Mumma" Mary Morgan, both foundational to my family’s lineage and our lasting connection to Nhanda Country.

Please note, "Nhanda" is spelled in various ways, but our family uses this spelling.

On the banks of the Gascoyne River - where I grew up. The river only flows a few times a year, and when it does, we always make the most of it! It’s such a special part of life in Carnarvon and a big source of inspiration in my art.

Yamati Country comes alive with the most vibrant and captivating wildflowers - it’s by far my favourite time of year! Spending time up north during this season fills me with fresh creative energy, and my artwork celebrates the beauty of these incredible landscapes.
